Tell us a bit about yourself and your family… My name is Marcus Yang HuiYu. But Marcus is just fine. If I had to say I was from somewhere it would be Singapore even though I was born in New Zealand. Singapore has been my home for the past 10 years and I am the most comfortable in that culture. The rest of my life I’ve spent time living all over: Pakistan, London, New York & New Zealand. Mine is a family of 5: mother, father, and 2 brother; one 2 years older and one 5 years younger than me.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your family… I have an older sister and an older brother in that order. My parents are Pediatricians, my sister Joanna is in Edinburgh in the UK studying medicine, and my brother Joseph is currently serving in NS, our country's army. Oh and I have a Papillion (breed of dog!) called Sprite.

I'm Tim Joe Mak, but for short call me Tim. I was brought up in a small island, something like Singapore, and it's called Penang. Situated in Malaysia, we are pretty close to the border of Malaysia and Thailand. Penang is one of the most unique places in the world, where you can find culture, a burst of colours, and of course F-O-O-D. Food in Penang has always been noted for it's originality and it's amazingly wide selection. Feeling hungry now? For those who know Sue Ann Mak previously when she was here - she is my sister and the only sibling I have - and of course I love her too much :) I have been in Melbourne for a pretty long time now, 2 years and counting with another 6 more to come.

My nursing career has poised many challenging dilemmas over the years, however predominantly the last two. There are many stories to tell. Some are wonderful, some horrific, but all are about life, and involve team effort, which makes all the difference. Comradeship is of utmost importance to get “through the worst shift” as life and death is what we deal with every day in ICU.
