But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere”. James 3:17

Influence is the power you have to affect other people’s thinking or actions by your words and example. Everyone has influence. Teachers influence students, preachers persuade congregants, even children affect their younger siblings’ behavior. The higher you are in a position of leadership, the broader your influence will become on others and the more persistent the responsibility will be on your life. When you accept the role of a leader, you accept the responsibility of influencing others.

Maybe you did not realize you were signing up for a lifestyle when you agreed to lead the church or accepted the promotion at work. Leadership is not a job; it is a lifestyle.

Lifestyle leadership requires godly wisdom. Therefore, the wisdom described in James 3:17 is important for you because it presents a ladder of wise character for the leader. Each characteristic builds upon the previous one and must be true and an integrated part of your lifestyle.

As you evolve as a wise leader, you will care for those in need and help to meet their needs through your good deeds for them. Although you do not seek their approval, you at least consider the effect your behavior will have on them.

People all around you are watching you. You may realize your influence on some of them, like your spouse, your children or your co-workers. But often there are others who admire and learn from you at a distance. If you want to be a consistent positive influence on others, embrace the responsibility of what you do. This will not only meet your needs, but it will also be a good example for others to follow.

Pray and ask God to show you how to be an even wiser leader to influence on others.
